Aeration and Over-Seed

Tips

Aeration and Over-Seed

It is almost here, that time of year in Fredericksburg when you need to plan your aeration and over-seeding.

The aeration process is designed to loosen compacted soil, create space for oxygen and nutrients to enter the soil and promote root development of existing grass.

The over-seeding process will help thicken existing grass and replace grass that may have been damaged during the season.  Over-seeding should be applied at a rate of 4-6lbs per 1000 square feet of area.  It is best to have the seeding done before October 15th.

Call our office for an estimate and we can help with both.

Rain and Chilly Temp in Late May

There have been straight of rain, yeah that is a lot.  For those of us in Fredericksburg, Stafford or Spotsylvania Virginia VA, that puts us gloomy mood, but our grass is loving it.

Just know that rain will stop and we will complain that the grass is turning brown.  Do not worry, we an help with a lawn sprinkler system.  When mother nature does not irrigate for you, use your custom designed irrigation system to water as needed.

Better yet, let us install a Smart Irrigation System.  Our Smart Lawn Sprinklers water based on weather.  This will ensure that when we have rain like this, the system knows what to do.  When the rain stops and we get temperatures into the 90’s, the system still knows what to do.

Soil Testing and pH Levels

Soil testing is a necessary practice to better understanding your soil acidity and allowing for your landscape to achieve its full potential. Soil acidity or pH impacts how your plant material will thrive in its soil environment.  Measuring and understanding the pH influences chemical properties and impacts the availability of nutrients to your plant material.  The correct pH for plant material can vary from plant to plant.  The only way to be sure, is to test the soil.

Salt Damage to Grass During Winter

Salt Damage

One of the obvious problems with winter is the usage of salt in northern climates. Grasses subjected to high salt levels can suffer root damage and develop other disease problems. Turf near roadways, walkways and other locations snow is pushed during removal are more likely to suffer from salt injury. Kentucky bluegrass does poorly when salt levels are higher. Joe Markell, president of Sunrise Landscape + Design in Sterling, Virginia, advises not to bother reseeding the areas with dead turfgrass. Instead remove a few inches of soil, replace with fresh soil and sod. Perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, red fescue, wheatgrass, alkaligrass and bermudagrass are all salt-tolerant grass options to grow in areas that experience frequent salt exposure during the winter. –

Crabgrass and Weeds

It is that time of year here in Fredericksburg and Stafford Virginia.  The hotter, humid days create a thriving environment for crabgrass growth.  If you did not get a good application of a pre-emergent down early in the season, you may be suffering from crabgrass and weed growth.  It has to be applied early and before temperatures get above 56 degrees.  Post emergent applications can help with managing crabgrass growth.
